Moat covered the challenging and technical course in 3:08:27, more than six minutes faster than his nearest competitor.

“It was a tough course,” Moat said. “I really went in thinking I would run about 20 minutes faster than I did. I was surprised by the technical aspect of it, but I did like how difficult it was.

“The sand slowed the pace down a little bit. We would go from sand to slick rock, and it was rough the whole way through, but it was beautiful and very scenic.”

This was Moat’s first national title after a standout career at Southern Utah University and a recent series of wins at Spartan Races, an obstacle racing series.

“I’ve been wanting to do a trail national championship race for a long time,” Moat said. “Two years ago I signed up for the marathon championships, but I got injured and wasn’t able to run.”

Now in its 11th year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
